Kentucky-based Americana/country singer-songwriter Jayce Turley knows how to spin a yarn and how to draw listeners in with a compelling lyrical story. The fact that he pairs his tales with an equally commanding and tasteful musical palette is a treat for any listener’s ears. If you didn’t know, based on the lyrical prowess and musical maturity, you’d expect that Turley has done some living and that he has had years of life experience under his belt. Fact is, he’s barely out of high school; clearly a proverbial old soul. On his brand new album, “Broke Down,” Turley displays all of the hallmarks of an artist in it for the long haul, and we’re pleased to join him for the ride. We sat down with Turley recently to discuss his new album, the challenges of sharing personal songs, and what’s next for this noteworthy, must-listen artist!
Hi, Jayce! You have a terrific new album that just came out called “Broke Down.” One of the songs on your new album, “Rust,” is really great and stood out to me. What can you tell us about this song? What inspired you to write it and what is it about?
“Rust” was a song written right before we hit the studio. I had it stewing with just a first verse and chorus for months, but finally put it together with little time left before we recorded. It’s the tale of a heartbreak as old as time. It’s about being made out to be the bad guy when maybe that’s not the case.
What was it like recording this album overall? What was the vibe in the studio, and how did this song, in particular, come together?
We had an amazing experience with Sneak Attack Studio and Jason Groves. He really helped to make this album everything we envisioned. We had a lot of fun with lots of jokes and good times. There was definitely some stressful moments but we made the best of it.
What do you hope this album conveys to those who listen to it?
I hope that whoever listens that may be experiencing a tough time knows they’re not alone. We all often feel “broke down” but it does get better.
Since you started out, how has your songwriting changed over time — both musically and lyrically? Do different things inspire you now? Where do you tend to get your biggest inspiration from these days?
I find myself writing less fiction and more reality nowadays. I find a song in everything and the joys and heartbreaks of life always help me covey my experience into words and chords.
Songwriting can be a really personal endeavor. Is it tough to share that stuff that usually might be private if you weren’t writing a song about it? Does unveiling the songs publicly, when you release a single or an EP or album, make you anxious or is it cathartic to have the songs out there?
It is definitely tough to share some experiences. I usually have relief to have my stories and true experiences out to the world. it helps me to open up about things I usually wouldn’t.
It’s not uncommon for an artist or band to be working on something new while promoting an album. Do you have anything in the pipeline to follow this album? What’s next from Jayce Turley?
I’m already on my route of writing a new album to be released sometime next year. I hope to hit the studio by the Fall.

I’m always playing shows! I wouldn’t call it a tour but you can catch me all over the eastern and some western states of the US for the rest of the year! I play every weekend and usually a few weekdays too! You’ll be able to find that on my website soon!
