Blending rich acoustic tones, soulful vocals, and a reflective delivery, “Southern Accents”captures the spirit of southern storytelling and showcases Tritt’s ability to honor his influences while forging his own distinctive path.
We caught up with Tristan to discuss the inspiration behind his latest release, his deep ties to the South, and the evolution of his sound as one of today’s rising voices in modern country rock.
Your new single is a beautiful rendition of Tom Petty’s “Southern Accents.” What drew you to this particular song, and what does it mean to you personally?
TT) I’ve always been a massive Tom Petty fan, but ‘Southern Accents’ is such a unique song within Petty’s discography. It’s an incredible love letter to the south and paints a nostalgic picture of America that a lot of folks yearn for. I can’t help but get a little emotional every time I hear his version of the song, so I figured I should cover it as an homage to both Tom’s legacy and my home.
You’ve said this track is one of Tom Petty’s most “country” songs. How did your own southern roots influence your interpretation of it?
I really just wanted it to be as stripped down and organic of a performance as possible. The lyrics speak from themselves, so it was more about what I didn’t do to it.

The emotion in my voice came from a real place, so I guess I just tried to cover it as best I could and not butcher a work of art.
Covering a legend like Tom Petty can be a bold move. How did you approach the challenge of honoring the original while still making the song your own?
I ultimately came to the conclusion that there is only ONE Tom Petty, so instead of trying to sound like him, I tried to just sound like myself. I would be lying if I didn’t mention that I amped up my “Southern Accents” just a tad. Typically it takes a couple of beers for that to come out naturally.
“Southern Accents” carries a deep sense of nostalgia and pride for southern heritage. What emotions were you hoping to capture in your version?
As someone who was born and raised in south, I hoped to capture the memories that I had growing up in Georgia and central Florida. I worked a lot of odd jobs growing up, from landscaping, construction, etc. It wasn’t hard to imagine the folks I worked with and try to sing it from there perspective.
The lyrics reflect a strong connection to place and identity. How do those themes resonate with your own life and the way you approach songwriting?
The Authenticity of this song is so incredible, while painting such a gorgeous picture in the mind of the listener. It’s hard not to wanna write like that after being so close to the song. If anything I just wanted to write more story-like songs, that really leave it to the listener to fill in the blanks.
Your rendition blends soul-drenched vocals with warm acoustic tones. Can you tell us about the production process and how you shaped the song’s sound?
I essentially heard two versions of the song, one being from Tom and the next from Johnny Cash. The Cash version is much more acoustic driven, so I thought it would be cool to mix the performance styles of both recordings.
This release follows your southern rock single “Wannabe.” How do you see “Southern Accents” fitting into your current musical direction and vision for 2025?
I’ve definitely been all over the place musically, however I believe that I am finally finding my own sound within the “gritty country” space. I don’t like being put into a box (based on genre), however I love the story telling aspect of country music, along with the energy and aggression of rock music.
Many fans describe your music as bridging traditional southern storytelling with modern country-rock. How intentional is that blend in your creative process?
It’s been intentionally unintentional. I’ve always loved telling stories and holding court, so the songs naturally have sort of a linear theme. Typically I’ll find a subject or reflect on a life experience and try write lyrics that tell a vague story of whatever it is I’m singing about.
Tom Petty’s influence can be felt across generations. How has his music shaped you as an artist and performer?
Tom Petty was such a powerhouse, not just as a writer, but as a performer as well. He has inspired me in more was than one. I catch myself still being in awe of some of his songs (which I’ve heard a million times) and still finding little Easter eggs within them. He is the definition of a true artist in my book. If I can replicate 1% of what he did in his work, I’d be okay with that.
With “Southern Accents,” you’ve shown a deep respect for Americana traditions. What do you hope listeners take away from this song and from your work as a whole?
It’s important to just slow down and not be so caught up in the future always. I constantly have to check myself and remember to live in the here and now. ‘Southern Accents’ is the perfect song for slowing down and reflecting on the incredible world we live in.
