Hot off her nomination for CMAOntario Songwriter of the Year, acclaimed London-based country artist Genevieve Fisher returns with her first single of 2024, “Now We’re Talking” – available to stream everywhere today. The upbeat love anthem was written by a powerhouse team of songwriters – Mackenzie PorterSteven Lee OlsenJason Massey and Lydia Vaughan – and marks a promising year brimming with new music from Fisher.

I am SO excited about this new song! I had reached out to my producer about 7 months ago looking for something uptempo. Among the songs he suggested was “Now We’re Talking” – this one jumped out at me as the “next one,” it’s quite literally mine and my husband’s love story,” Genevieve shares. “The tracks were recorded and produced in Nashville, with my vocals recorded in my little home studio (aka my closet haha!). It’s an honour to be releasing a song written by such incredible songwriters, and hope you love this one as much as I do!”

Hi Genevieve. Thank you for taking the time to speak with Complete Country.

For those unfamiliar with your musical path. Give us a brief background on how you get to this point in your career.

I’ve been in the music industry for over 15 years now. Growing up, music was the centre of my universe. I lived and breathed it; so I knew it was a path I wanted to continue on and I’m now making a living doing what I love! I started to make a name for myself when I released my single “July” back in 2011. That song really put me on the map in Canadian Country music. The song hit 41 on the country chart in Canada, and ended up getting recognized by the CCMA, landing me a spot in the 2012 New Artist Showcase at the CCMA Awards in Saskatoon. After that, I really hit to ground running. Making trips down to Nashville to write and record. I’ve penned songs with Jennifer Schott, Phil Barton, Victoria Banks, Emma-Lee, Karen Kosowski, Alee, Jason Massey, Lydia Sutherland, Jason Blaine and Aaron Goodvin (to name a few!) I’ve also had performance opportunities at Boots and Hearts, Lucknow Music in the Fields, Manitoulin Country Fest, Haggersville Rocks, Aboriginal Day Live and the Indspire Awards (fun fact; I’m a proud Indigenous woman from Chippewas of the Thames First Nation!), and many other venues/shows throughout Canada! A show that truly stands out for me and a core memory is when I had the opportunity to open for Lee Brice in my hometown of London Ontario at London Music Hall! That’s a little bit about me and what I’ve accomplished over the years!

Tell us how you came upon your new single “Now We’re Talking”

In August of 2023, my producer Jason Massey sent me some songs for consideration for my next single. Now We’re Talking was one of them, and I instantly fell in love with it! It was written by Mackenzie Porter, Jason Massey, Steven Lee Olsen and Lydia Vaughan. I feel very honoured to have been able to record and release this track!

Where and when was this recorded? Give a shout out to the people who played and worked on this song.

The song was recorded in September/October of 2023. I recorded my vocals at my home studio (I was actually pregnant with my son at the time which is kind of a cool memory for me), and the rest of the track was done in Nashville! I was really prepared for this release because I was due at the end of December and wanted to make sure everything was ready to go before having my baby! The song was produced by Jason Massey, mixed by Billy Decker and mastered by Mike Cervantes. Johnny Fung is on dobro, steel and electric; Evan Hutchings on drums, and Jason Massey on acoustic, bass, keys and programming. I love how the song turned out!

Do you have more new music scheduled to come out this year?

I do have some songs sitting in my back pocket that I’m super excited to release! Over this next year I’ll be working on an EP that will consist of some pretty personal songs! I want to show my fans a more authentic side of me and bring them into my life a little bit more. I’m in my “mom era” and I’m super proud of that and really embracing it! I want to show independent female artists that you can still be successful while having a family!

When you first started did you have a sense of which type of music you wanted to make, or did it take a while to land on a sound?

I definitely think it took me a while to land on a sound. Initially my music was a lot more traditional. If you listen to my first album “Without Boarders” you’ll hear the songs are very “country” sounding which I loved! I still am a sucker for traditional country. When I started working with my producer Jason Massey back in 2015, he really helped me shape my sound and vibe of my music. At that time, he was actually a co-producer on Kelsea Ballerini’s “Love Me Like You Mean It.” I remember loving that track so much that it helped inspire my sound and the direction I wanted to take: country but a little bit pop. I think my vibe has stayed pretty consistent, but also have incorporated more traditional country aspects/instrumentation to my work over the last couple of years. I’m super proud of my sound and the quality of the production of my music!

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

I love going for walks/hiking and have a huge passion for interior design! My husband and I recently built a new home on our dream property and it was such an amazing experience getting to design the house. I loved every minute of it and can’t wait to raise my family in the country!

What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?

Writing music and singing in itself makes me super passionate about what I do for a living! I’ve been singing since a very young age and was classically trained, so I really pride myself on my singing abilities. I truly love singing and challenging my vocal range!

Is there a moment or memory in your life as a musician that you always want to hold onto?
Or a moment that has taught you a lot?

There are so many moments/memories; but one in particular would be when my single Take It On Home hit Top 20 in Canada. That year (2017) was a highlight for me. I remember having so many performance opportunities that year because of the success of that song. However, its crazy to think abut how many highs and lows I’ve endured. The moment my song hit Top 20 I remember thinking “anything is possible,” but in the same breath you’re also reminded that those highs only last so long. That moment taught me to roll with the punches and embrace those highs. Being an artist has made me extremely resilient and I’m very proud of myself for that.

Are any shows upcoming to showcase your talent?

I’m super excited for my first show of the summer which will be Canada Day in Grand Bend (located on the shores of Lake Huron in Southwestern ON). They always expect a huge turn out, so I’m really looking forward to that!

What are some venues that you would love to play in the future?

In the future, I’d love to play Dauphin’s Country Fest, Cavendish Beach Music Festival and the Calgary Stampede! I haven’t had the opportunity to play many shows outside Ontario so those ones are on my bucket list!

Any fun facts or hidden talents you would like to share?

I would consider myself to be a pretty good cook; I absolutely love being in the kitchen, trying out new recipes and cooking for friends! I can’t think of any hidden talents, but I mean, I can drink a glass of wine pretty quickly (haha!)
