INTERVIEW // AMANDA & JAMES Return with No-Nonsense Breakup Anthem “Comeback”

Amanda & James are a CMAO-nominated Canadian country duo celebrated for their powerhouse vocals, rich harmonies, and songs that hit you right in the feels. Hailing from Southern Ontario, they blend emotional depth with playful charm—delivering heartfelt ballads, clever banter, and the kind of onstage chemistry that pulls you into the moment. Their originals, like Another Round and Two Wrongs Don’t Make a Right, pair effortlessly with their favourite covers like Need You Now, Shallow, (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life, and more. On stage, they bring high-energy polish with the intimacy of your favourite house concert. Off stage, they’re hands-on artists who care deeply about their craft—and even more about the community they’re building with fans.

“Comeback” has a bold, playful confidence right out of the gate. What was it about this song that made you instantly connect and say, “This one’s ours”?

  • “Comeback” was pitched to us by Sam Daviau, who co-wrote the song with Ali Dutton and Joey DePaiva. The original worktape had plenty of attitude but moved at a slower pace, so we trusted our instincts, sped it up, sharpened a few lines, and made it unmistakably ours. There are endless sad breakup songs out there, but what we love about  “Comeback” is that it’s fun, upbeat, and audacious. It’s a chapter-closing, door-locking, don’t-text-me-at-3am anthem for anyone who is done with the will-they-won’t-they cycle. No reunion, no revival, no sequel and definitely no Ross-and-Rachel energy. Just that empowering moment when you realize you’re worth more than another spin on the relationship rollercoaster.

The track flips the typical breakup narrative on its head — no late-night texts, no second chances. Why did that message feel important for you to deliver right now?

  • It feels like we’re living in the self-respect era. Between TikTok therapists, Instagram quotes, and everyone suddenly knowing their attachment style, people are way more tuned in to boundaries and walking away from what isn’t healthy. The whole will-they-won’t-they storyline used to be romanticized, but honestly, there’s nothing cute about being stuck in emotional limbo. Life’s too short for mixed signals and late-night “you up?” texts. This song is our permission slip to shut the door, lock it, and throw a little party for choosing yourself and moving on.

The lyrics lean into cheeky nostalgia while firmly closing the door. How did you balance humor and empowerment in your performance of the song?

  • Humour and empowerment are big parts of who we are as artists and as people. Both of us are intentional about relationships, life choices, business, and at the same time, we try not to take ourselves too seriously too often. It’s all a balance. We like to work hard and also have a ton of fun. We are VERY quippy with each other and enjoy a little teasing banter. We immediately identified with that energy in the  “Comeback” lyrics.

Vocally, “Comeback” really showcases your harmonic chemistry. How do you approach blending your voices while still letting each personality shine?

  • We are very similar and very different. Amanda can be very focused and serious and James is “Captain Fun Times”. Amanda finds James hilarious and James finds James hilarious. In all seriousness, we’ve both spent years developing our voices. It’s really fun singing with another person who also works hard and has a lot of range and power. Our drive and work ethic are well-matched and we love the same kind of music.  “Comeback” allows us both to belt our faces off and play off each other on stage – it’s like telling someone off vocally, which is actually super fun.

You worked with producer Matt Koebel and Brandon Unis on this release. What did they bring to the song that helped elevate it to the next level?

  • Working with Matt Koebel and Brandon Unis definitely helped make “Comeback” pop. Matt’s instincts around instrumentation and vibe brought out the song’s bluesy swagger, giving it that fun, fearless, slightly rowdy edge. Brandon’s mix tied it all together beautifully, carving out space for every element while keeping the vocals front and centre. The end result feels confident, cohesive, and instantly satisfying. Hit play and it just works. We dare you to give it a listen.

The song has a bluesy bounce and undeniable groove. How would you describe your sound to new listeners discovering Amanda & James for the first time?

  • Imagine a mix of Blake Shelton’s charm and Adele’s emotion: honest, warm, and just a little bit cheeky. We have trouble putting our sound into one box. Our songs run the gamut from feel-good, crank-it-up anthems to heart-on-your-sleeve ballads, all anchored by rich harmonies and big, soaring vocals. If you want to party, listen to Another Round. If you’re longing for someone, listen to Two Wrongs Don’t Make A Right. If you love reimagined cover songs, listen to our country version of (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life. If you love those soaring 90s-style duets, listen to We’re Okay. And if you are totally DONE with someone, listen to “Comeback”.

After a standout year and a CMAOntario nomination for Group or Duo of the Year, how has that recognition influenced your confidence or creative direction?

  • It has completely gone to James’ head. Total diva. Demands sparkling water only. (Kidding) Honestly, the CMAOntario nomination for Group or Duo of the Year was incredibly humbling. Being included alongside so many artists we admire felt surreal, and getting to perform Another Round at the 2025 CMAOntario Awards was a huge honour we don’t take lightly. We’re genuinely grateful just to have been nominated and trusted with that moment on stage. That weekend definitely gave us some momentum. We signed with FAME Group Agency shortly after and landed some really exciting gigs, and then being named Breakout Artist of the Week on Hot Country Radio Toronto was the cherry on top. Creatively, it didn’t change who we are or what we want to say, but it absolutely lit a fire under us. It reminded us that we’re on the right track, and it pushed us to work harder, aim higher, and say yes to the opportunities that come our way.

Your live show, Time of My Life: The Greatest Duets in Concert, has become a fan favourite. How does “Comeback” fit into the energy and storytelling of your live performances?

  • We do two different types of performances – we have our Amanda & James country set that is mostly originals and a few covers. We also have Time of My Life: The Greatest Duets in Concert – it’s a show packed with many the popular duets people know and love from past and present from many genres – everything from Islands In The StreamUp Where We Belong, and Ain’t Not Mountain High Enough to ShallowNeed You Now, and that iconic song from Dirty Dancing (have you heard our country version of I’ve Had The Time of My Life?!). What’s unique about our Time of My Life show is that it still includes a few of our originals. Audiences seem to love that we include those in the show. Instead of dressing up as famous artists of the past, we host the show as ourselves and lead people on a journey through all this awesome music and then we introduce them to some of our own music. “Comeback” isn’t in that show yet, but it might be soon! We’ll be taking that show on the road next year. There’s a lot of great stuff to look forward to.

You both come from different parts of Canada. How do your individual musical backgrounds shape the dynamic of the duo?

  • It’s a little cheesy to say but James is a small-town boy and Amanda is a city girl. Raised in Pembroke and Picton and now based in Stratford with his wife Ange and three cats, James has never shied away from reinvention. He spent over a decade touring North America in a Tim McGraw tribute act, won Season 2 of the reality talent show The Shot, and released original music with Durham County Band and on his own before building a duo with Amanda. Amanda Kind is a West Coast girl from White Rock, British Columbia raised by the beach. Now based in Waterloo, Ontario (despite a lifelong grudge against winter), her sound is inspired by all the music she grew up listening to – everything from Dolly Parton and Whitney Houston to Alanis Morissette and Green Day. They cannot agree on coffee – James is staunchly Tims and Amanda is Starbucks forever. That push and pull is exactly what makes their musical partnership click. Different roots, same wavelength, and somehow it all works.

With “Comeback” marking a new chapter, what can fans expect next from Amanda & James in 2025 and beyond?

  • The road ahead is busy in the best possible way. We’re bouncing between stages, writing rooms, and the studio as we gear up to record our debut album – it feels equal parts thrilling and slightly chaotic. We each knew exactly who we were as solo artists, so discovering our identity as a duo has been a creative adventure, full of trial, error, and some really exciting surprises. We love too many styles to stay in one neat lane, so we’re giving ourselves permission to experiment and chase whatever sparks the most joy. If Taylor Swift can hop genres and thrive, we’re feeling pretty good about taking a few risks ourselves. On the live side, 2025 was packed and we’re aiming even higher for 2026, with shows in Mexico this winter and big hopes for a festival-filled summer. There’s a lot to be excited about.
