INTERVIEW // JUSTINE BLANCHET on her new single ‘First Love’

Canadian country artist Justine Blanchet is celebrating her current single, “First Love” on all digital streaming platforms, and the recently released live piano rendition on YouTube.

Written by Emma-Lee, Blake Bollinger and Claire Wright, “First Love” was produced in Nashville by Grammy-nominated Danick Dupelle (Tebey, Tyler Joe Miller, Matt Lang). Produced as a clear vocally-driven country song with added pop influences, “First Love” also features vocals provided by another Music City-based Canadian, Ben Chase. It is the first offering of new music from Blanchet since her debut EP, “Don’t Ask Me to Dance” was released in 2023.

What inspired you to record your new single, First Love?

I loved the simplicity of the lyrics and the tender emotions behind the song. Many times, we hear happier love songs, but rarely do we hear love songs that talk about the reality of dating.

Can you tell us a little bit about the song’s meaning and message?

The song is about wishing to be your significant other’s first love. It establishes that basically everybody has had their first love and that it’s inevitable to love a heart that has been loved before.

How did you approach the recording process for First Love?

We already had an amazing demo that was sent to us, so we took it as inspiration and added our own touches on the track.

What was your favorite part about creating and recording First Love?

The Live Performance video was probably my favorite part! It was my first experience filming a live version of a song. I’ve been playing piano since I was four years old, so it was also a fun touch to bring to the country music world.

What do you hope listeners will take away from this song?

I hope listeners feel seen and heard. It’s okay to love someone after losing a first love. It doesn’t make you less loveable.

Are there any personal experiences or stories that you drew upon in recording this song?

I’ve definitely had my fair share of adventures in the dating world and wondering if someone’s first love is still around is a feeling I’ve had before.

How would you describe the sound and style of First Love compared to your previous work?

I would describe as this song closer to a pop sound rather than country. It is also a little more emotional. I typically like to sing female-empowerment songs, so songs like First Love are different for sure.

Do you have any upcoming projects or collaborations in the works that you can share with us?

I have been busy songwriting and performing! But I’ve put time aside to go to the studio and I’m happy to announce that I have more music coming very soon.

What do you enjoy most about being a musician and sharing your music with the world?

I get to make people feel emotions. Sometimes those emotions are ones they would rather ignore and bury, but I hope that songs like mine can help people heal from hurt and feel understood.

Is there anything else you’d like to add or share?

Thank you so much for having me and make sure to follow me on all socials to keep up with the latest!
