GRAMMY®-nominated trio Midland reveals the track list for their forthcoming Dave Cobb-produced album Barely Blue (out September 20 via Big Machine Records) and releases“Vegas,” along with the song’s official video. An ode to Sin City, “Vegas” reframes its infamous calling card of “what happens in Vegas…” into a tender song of a brief, but true romance. The video, directed by Harper Smith, reflects the melancholy and vintage aesthetic of the song, finding the boys on the quieter side of the showbiz lights, betting and playing cards with enough whiskey to last all night.
Produced by 9x GRAMMY winner, Dave Cobb, the eight-song collection finds lead singer/guitarist Mark Wystrach, bassist/vocalist Cameron Duddy and guitarist/vocalist Jess Carson leaning into the trio’s signature celestial harmonies that harken back to Laurel Canyon and exploring the tides of loneliness and the stoicism of holding one’s own while imbuing an unparalleled sense of vulnerability that breaks down the facade of masculinity and honors the spirit of loving, losing and moving on.
About the new single, Mark Wystrach explains: “‘Vegas’ is an homage to the wildest town in the world and the intense connections and losses that tend to happen in Sin City along the way. Sonically, the song feels like a tip of the cowboy hat to early George Strait classics penned by the legendary Dean Dillon.”
Jess Carson adds: “‘Vegas’ takes Sin City’s unofficial calling card ‘what happens in Vegas’ and interprets it through a love story. The phrase instead here is a sweet and tender ode to an all too brief romance that lingers after the tellers have returned to their daily lives.”
“Vegas” is the third taste of music from Barely Blue, following the release of “Lucky Sometimes,” which was praised by Rolling Stone, MusicRow, Wide Open Country, BrooklynVegan, and Billboard who described it as, “A tumble of pared-back guitars, harmonica and Laurel Canyon-esque harmonies, the group captures the euphoric feeling of being on a high-rolling streak of good luck, and enjoying the ride no matter how long it runs.” The album’s first single “Old Fashioned Feeling,” which was released in May, was named one of the best songs of the week by Rolling Stone and Billboard.
The trio has also announced additional tour dates (on sale now) for The Get Lucky Tour that kicks off on September 19 in Cincinnati, OH and will make stops at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on October 12 with Jackson Dean and at the ACL Live in their hometown of Austin, TX on December 20. Find a full list of tour dates below or visit their website.
Earlier this year, Midland collaborated with Orville Peck on “The Hurtin’ Kind” which appeared on Peck’s new duets album Stampede: Vol. 1. They also released a cover of “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” for the star-studded Petty Countryalbum.
