MIKE PLUME Releases Fresh Take On His Iconic Canadian Anthem “This Is Our Home (8:30 Newfoundland)”

At a time when celebrating what it means to be Canadian feels more important than ever, the Mike Plume Band delivers a powerful reimagined version of their iconic track “This Is Our Home (8:30 Newfoundland)” via Royalty Records.

Originally released 16 years ago as “8:30 Newfoundland (This Is Our Home)”, the song celebrates the diverse spirit of Canada, capturing the pride, unity, and sense of belonging felt by Canadians from coast to coast. With its timeless message, it underscores the strength and resilience that define the nation, reminding listeners of the deep connection they share with their homeland.

Known for his richly detailed storytelling and passionate approach to songwriting, Mike Plume has built a career steeped in Canadiana and roots rock, first making his mark during the alt-country wave of the early 1990s. In addition to “This Is Our Home (8:30 Newfoundland)”, other memorable tracks in Mike’s catalogue, including “So Long Stompin’ Tom”, and “On Remembrance Day” capture the essence of Canadian identity and history, showcasing his ability to blend personal narratives with broader cultural themes. Mike and his loyal band have toured extensively across Canada, the United States, and Europe, sharing the stage with musical giants like Steve Earle, The Mavericks, John Hiatt, Blue Rodeo, and Great Big Sea, just to name a few. With more than 3,000 live performances under his belt, Plume has earned his place as one of Canada’s most beloved musical storytellers.

Asked why he decided to re-record the song after all these years, Plume explained, “A long time ago, I heard an interview with Bob Weir from the Grateful Dead where he talked about how songs are living things, always evolving. That really stuck with me. There’s a rhythm, a shuffle, that’s in everyone’s DNA. It’s the same shuffle that makes songs like ‘Walking After Midnight’ by Patsy Cline, ‘Harvest Moon’ by Neil Young, and ‘Stir It Up’ by Bob Marley feel timeless. I started incorporating that shuffle when I played the song live, and it just clicked—it felt like it was always meant to be that way. So, when we were recording new tracks in January, I suggested we try ‘This Is Our Home’ with that same groove. As soon as we did, it worked like a house on fire!”

The reimagined version of “This Is Our Home (8:30 Newfoundland)” comes at a time when the sense of Canadian pride and unity is stronger than ever. As the nation faces new challenges and moments of reflection, Plume’s heartfelt reworking of the song aims to spark a renewed sense of belonging, celebrating the unbreakable bond that connects Canadians from all walks of life.
