Robyn Ottolini chronicles the hilarious andhorrifying real-life events of a first – and very much last – date on her unapologetic new single “Airplane Bottle,” available today. To call this song “highly anticipated” isn’t your typical press release hyperbole – fans have been clamouring for this one ever since Ottolini started teasing it on social media months ago. The response was instant, with longtime followers and new fans alike flooding the comments with their own first date horror stories (some even posting covers before the track officially dropped).
As for the offending suitor? He brought a mini bottle of vodka to the bar to begin the date and left her on the side of the road at the end.
“Would I wish this date on anyone else? Never. Did I turn it into a song I love with all my heart? Of course,” says Ottolini. “Looking back, I can see the red flags, especially after writing this song two days later while actively processing it with my producer and friends. It feels so conversational and on the nose of what I went through, that I can’t imagine any other melodies or lyrical changes to capture this small but huge moment in my life. It’s very reminiscent of ‘F-150’ and how I wrote out word for word what I was feeling, and didn’t hold anything back.”
Two days after the date, the guy showed up at her publishing house while she was writing this song to pick up the sunglasses he left in her purse.
“For the video, we thought it would be fun to depict me as a teacher at her place of work, which is what my sister and mom do for a living. When he is summoned to pick up the sunglasses, he ends up getting taught the ultimate lesson in dating do’s and don’ts.”
Over five years, a quintet of EPs, and multiple dazzling singles, the trucker’s daughter from a blue-collar Canadian town has amassed more than 160 million streams – 60 million alone for her rip-snorting heartbreak smash “F-150,” which incinerated TikTok while cementing Ottolini’s status as a supremely relatable lyricist able to make the ordinary scan as extraordinary. Robyn is not only a CCMA Award winner, but has reached the #3 spot on Rolling Stones’ All Genre Viral Chart, and had three Top 40 singles on Billboard’s Canadian country chart. Ottolini has seen the likes of some of country music’s biggest festivals, and headlined shows across her native country, as well as opened up for Shania Twain, Tim McGraw, Breland and Tyler Rich, just to name a few.
“Airplane Bottle” is the latest song in a success of new releases, as she builds towards her – if we may say it again, highly anticipated – debut album. Stay tuned for more new music and other exciting announcements in the coming months.
