Photos by Veronique Jones – Born and raised in North Carolina, Luke Combs has rapidly transformed from a working-class kid into one of the most dominant forces in modern country music. Growing up in Asheville, Combs was a natural vocalist from a young age, performing in vocal groups and even singing at Carnegie Hall as a child. However, it wasn’t until his college years at Appalachian State University—where he worked as a bouncer while teaching himself to play guitar—that he decided to pursue music full-time. Dropping out just 21 credit hours shy of his degree, he took a gamble on his talent and moved to Nashville, building a grassroots following online before catching the attention of the industry.

Combs completely redefined modern country radio success right out of the gate with his 2017 triple-platinum debut album, This One’s for You. His debut single, “Hurricane,” achieved RIAA Diamond status, kicking off an unprecedented, historic run where he became the first artist to top the Billboard Country Airplay chart with his first five consecutive singles—a streak he eventually extended to a staggering 13 consecutive number-ones. Blending a powerhouse, soul-infused vocal style with a gritty, traditional country backbone, his subsequent chart-topping albums like What You See Is What You GetGrowin’ Up, and Gettin’ Old cemented his status as a certified hitmaker.

Beyond his impressive chart statistics, Combs has earned a massive, fiercely loyal fanbase known as the “Bootleggers” by staying unapologetically true to his everyday-man roots. His catalog seamlessly balances high-energy anthems about working-class life with deeply personal, vulnerable ballads like “Beautiful Crazy” and “Forever After All,” written about his wife, Nicole. His massive crossover appeal was further solidified by his critically acclaimed, chart-topping 2023 cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car,” which resulted in a historic, show-stopping duet with Chapman at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Today, the multi-platinum singer-songwriter stands as a member of the Grand Ole Opry and a multi-time CMA Entertainer of the Year. Despite headlining massive stadium tours worldwide and becoming a premier face of the genre, Combs remains deeply grounded and community-focused, frequently headlining major benefit shows like the Concert for Carolina to aid disaster relief in his home state. With his trademark trucker hat, blue-collar work ethic, and a rare gift for timeless songwriting, Luke Combs continues to shape the sound and heart of contemporary country music.
